Residential Carpet
There are thousands of carpet styles and colors to choose from when selecting carpet for your home. With so many colors and designs available, selecting the right carpet can be a difficult decision. Narrow your search by choosing shades that match the overall mood or tone you want to set for each room. Try cool blues or greens to create a calm, peaceful setting, and warm reds or golden shades to make a large space feel cozier. Light colors can make small rooms feel larger and more open & dark shades or patterns can hide stains. Before settling on a neutral shade, decide whether you want your carpet to serve as a focal point or fade into the background. Only go neutral if your walls, furnishings or artwork serve as focal points.
What Home Owners Need to Know
It's important to be realistic when buying carpet for your home. Having soft, luxurious, white carpeting stretching from wall to wall throughout your home probably sounds nice; if you have kids and pets, however, it may not be the best idea. That being said, having kids and pets does not mean that you are doomed to living with ugly, rough, utilitarian carpet. Your budget is not the only thing to be considered when buying new carpet. Carpet quality, type, color, foot traffic, installation, warranty, even how long you will be in your home can factor in the decision. Here are a few tips to help with carpet selection.

Carpet Quality

With carpet you absolutely get what you pay for. Buy the best you can afford. A more expensive carpet will have much more quality. Not only will it last you longer, saving you money in the long run, but you'll notice the difference under your foot too.
How long your carpet will last depends on how well it is made. Quality construction will affect the durability, appearance and price of the carpet and is most influenced by the twist of the fibers and the density of the tufts.
Twist refers to how tightly the fiber (carpet yarn) has been twisted. This is especially important in cut pile carpet because the tips are exposed and can become untwisted, giving the carpet a matted and worn appearance. The tighter the yarn is twisted, the better the carpet will stand up to crushing and matting.
Density refers to both the amount, and how tightly packed together the fibers are within the carpet. The closer together the fibers are placed, the denser the carpet will be, and the better it will wear and perform.

Carpet Type

Nylon is the most durable and stain resistant carpet fiber available, when treated with stain protection. It is the fiber of choice for homes with pets and children and for those who entertain a lot. A dense nylon carpet is perfect for heavy traffic in hallways and stairs.
Polyester is known for its luxurious look, feel and wonderful selection of colors and styles. It's a good value for homes with a normal amount of traffic. Polyester carpet does not have the same wearability as nylon.
Olefin (berber) offers good stain and moisture resistance, but scores below nylon and polyester for wearability It is best suited for loop pile construction or high, very dense cut piles.
Wool is favored for its natural beauty. Wool carpet has natural soil resistance qualities, but is not inherently stain resistant. Wool looks good for a long time and is well constructed and is the most expensive of these carpet fibers.

Foot Traffic

Before settling on a single type of carpet, think about where it will be placed in your home. Is it an area that gets a lot of foot traffic? If so, you definitely don't want to select something like olefin (berber), which is not very resilient and is famous for attracting dirt. Furthermore, you should look for high-density carpeting, since it's a lot less likely to become matted and worn.

Carpet Installation

A quality installation can be just as important as your carpet selection. When getting carpet installed, make sure that you know what services your installer will provide and what you might need to handle yourself. For example, there may be an additional charge to move your furniture, remove and dispose of old carpet and cushion or install transitions and thresholds.
A reputable carpet retailer will also provide a lifetime guarantee for their installation. If their will be a seam, the seam should be placed in a low traffic area. The location may also be determined by furniture placement. The seam location would be determined when measurements are taken during your in home consultation.
